Lara Croft Way is now a real official street name in the UK

Last year we reported that Derby, a city in the UK, is considering naming one of its streets Lara Croft Way through a vote.

More than 27,000 people took part in the vote to name the new £36.2m Derby road. Lara Croft Way captured 89 percent of the votes, which was up against names after footballer Steve Bloomer, the astronomer John Flamsteed and the engineer George Sorocold, according to the BBC.

The connection between Derby and Lara Croft lies in now defunct game development studio Core Design, which created the Tomb Raider series.

"The vote really captured the imagination of people from across the world and, despite my lack of gaming knowledge, I accept that a majority of 89% for Lara Croft is too overwhelming to ignore," said Councillor Lucy Care, cabinet member for planning and transportation. "She was created in Derby and deserves to stand alongside some of the more traditional icons of the city."
